In the Autumn of 2014, the now well-accomplished singer-songwriter KEVIN MORBY moved to the small Los Angeles neighborhood of Mount Washington. Previous tenants at his new home happened to leave an upright piano behind, and Kevin, a beginner at the piano, immediately sat at the new instrument and began composing the songs that would form 'Singing Saw', his first album for new label Dead Oceans. Formerly the bass guitarist of the folk rock band Woods, and the frontman of The Babies, KEVIN MORBY began a solo career in 2013 and boy are we glad he did. CUT WORMS is the nom de plume of Max Clarke, assumed while studying illustration at Chicago's Columbia College. With a born knack for conjuring warm sounds and fine images, CUT WORMS’ songs crackle with the heat of a love-struck nostalgia: golden threads of storytelling, like visceral memories, woven together with a palpable Everly Brothers' influence and 50s/60s naiveté. On his latest work, Hollow Ground (Jagjaguwar), Clarke finds himself the closest he’s been towards achieving his specific musical aesthetic as his sharp, self-aware lyricism rides gallantly along the infectious sock-hop energy riddled throughout. The Detroit singer/songwriter has been visible for the better part of her years-long career singing in Frontier Ruckus, or more recently co-fronting Failed Flowers, but somewhere a vibrant collection of solo material slowly began taking form.
