What We Say

Jorge Mário da Silva was born in 1970 in Belford Roxo in Rio de Janeiro, and soon knew that he wanted to be a musician. He went through several jobs since he was 10 years old, was a frequenter of dances and samba wheels in Rio and started singing early in the evening. He left home at age 19 and was a homeless for a few years, where he made his first contact with the theater. Discovered by clarinetist Paulo Moura, he auditioned for a musical and since then his life has completely changed. Seu Jorge (nickname given by friend and drummer Marcelo Yuka) achieved his first professional achievement as a musician in 1998: member of the band Farofa Carioca, released the album Moro in Brazil in Portugal, Japan and Brazil. In 2001 he released the first solo album Samba Esporte Fino, produced by Mário Caldato and Seu Jorge, mixed and mastered in Los Angeles. The following year he composed with Ed Motta the song "Has space in the Van" and also realized the project of samba of high party called Caatinga of Swing, with presentations in a nightclub in the zone south of Rio and Skol Rio. In 2003 he recorded the album CRU in Itaipava, with the French music producer Jerome Pigeon, and that same year composed in partnership with the singer Ana Carolina, the songs Beat of the Beata and Do not talk that way for the album of her great success, Estampado. In 2004 he recorded in Rome the video clip of the song Tive Razão, with participation of the actors Willen Dafoe and Bill Murray, directed by Mariana Jorge. Then he released the DVD MTV Presents Seu Jorge and composed with the musician BID the track And then for the album Bambas and biritas Vol. 1. For two consecutive years (2003 and 2004) he won the APCA [Paulista Art Critics Association] award for best singer of the year. In September 2004 he released the CRU album in France (by the label Naïve), and in England, resulting in 5 stars in the French and English specialized critics, editorials of emphasis in the magazines Rolling Stones, Elle France, Vogue France and participations in programs live of television. It was acclaimed by the European public and media as a new great representative of Brazilian music. He was invited by the BBC television network to sing alongside Black Eye Peas and Foo Fighters on Jools Holand's hit television show, where he returned a few years later. Still in this same period he made the launching of the DVD The Life Aquatic, played in the Place de la Bastille in Paris, alongside Gilberto Gil, Caetano Veloso, Lenine, Daniela Mercury and Jorge Benjor, made a show at the Montreux Jazz Festival and toured Europe. In mid-2005 he launched CRU in Japan, where he had already accumulated a large number of fans since Farofa Carioca. Upon returning to Brazil recorded the album and the DVD of the show Seu Jorge & Ana Carolina - live. In September of the same year it took to the US the tour of the disc CRU in the main cities of the country with exhausted tickets in all. During the carnival of 2006 he recorded a documentary for the BBC of London, whose theme was his life, aired on the South Bank Show program, and then shown in Brazil, the United States and Europe. In April, she opened the shows of the singer, Cesaria Évora, in New York, Boston and Washington, and in May Seu Jorge received Gilles Petterson and CNN in his house for the recording of a program broadcast all over the world. Between June and July, he toured the USA and Canada, performing 21 shows in 29 days, including the closing of the Miami Film Festival; Bonnaroo Festival in Manchester; Stern Grove Festival in San Francisco; Coastal Jazz Festival in Vancouver; Summerstage Festival in Central Park, New York; Montreal Jazz Festival; Quebec City Summer Festival, among others, with acclaim from the American public and media, which gave him extra energy to stretch the tour throughout the UK and Portugal. At the end of 2006 he focused on the recording and production of América Brasil - O Disco, under which he toured for two consecutive years on national and international soil. In January 2009, he recorded America Brasil The DVD. In July 2010 he released the album Seu Jorge & Almaz by the American label Now Again. The project was born in 2008, when he was invited to sing in a song part of the soundtrack of the film Linha de Passe, by Walter Salles and Daniela Thomas. From the meeting with the musicians Lúcio Maia, Pupillo and Antônio Pinto, a strong friendship emerged and the desire to record an album. Twelve versions of songs chosen by them were so soon recorded, but the release of the disc only happened two years later, due to the agendas of those involved. In the middle of 2010 a tour of 16 concerts in the main American cities was accomplished with immense success and consecration. In 2011 he released the album Músicas para Churrasco Vol. 1, and on November 20 of the same year, on the national day of the black conscience, he recorded the DVD with public success. The launch came 1 year later, on the same date. Seu Jorge defines himself as a popular singer and composer, who likes many musical genres, but whose foundation is samba: Samba is our truth, our particularity, our gold medal, our bulwark, our Brazilian standard.
