The Hyde Park Jazz Festival is celebrating its 10th anniversary this summer with 36 performances across 11 stages, taking place September 24 and 25.
The festival partnered with the Reva & David Logan Center For The Arts to commission composer and alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon to compose a 60-minute piece to be performed with Chicago’s Spektral Quartet. According to Zenon, the composition is inspired by rural areas of Puerto Rico.
Other major acts include pianist Randy Weston performing solo, trumpeter Amir ElSaffar’s Two Rivers Ensemble, saxophonist Matana Roberts and trumpeter Tom Harrell’s TRIP ensemble. Local Chicago acts include trumpeter Orbert Davis, pianist Willie Pickens, vocalist Dee Alexander and trumpeter Bobby Lewis.
For the first time, the Hyde Park Art Center will collaborate with the festival to install visual arts piece on the Midway Plaisance. As of now, the park will feature four commissioned pieces.
The festival is free with a suggested $5 donation.
