Last month, Chicago musician Derek Nelson released Missouri, his newest EP, and debuted the full length release from his new band Martin Van Ruin, Every Man A King. The latter was recorded and engineered by Neil Strauch, who has worked with bands like Bonnie Prince Billy and Iron & Wine.
“I Am There” from Missouri, features a dark guitar tone and dramatic vocal harmonies, giving the song a stark feeling, though all emphasis remains on Nelson’s voice and imagery-heavy lyrics.
Martin Van Ruin promises a bigger sound, taking some emphasis off the singer. Violin, lap steel, trumpet and melodica add depth to the tracks, which offer plenty of upbeat, rocking moments drenched in warm, country harmonies.
Martin Van Ruin joins a great line-up at The Empty Bottle on Friday, Jan. 10 and next play The Hideout on Feburary 21st.
