Festival Watch is a Tomorrow’s Verse feature where we break down festival news into the facts you need to know.
Sheffield Garden Walk – July 22-23
Headliners To Watch
Foxygen – Four albums in, Foxygen have remained dedicated to following all possible directions in nostalgic 60s psychedelic music. The band’s recent album Hang may be their most fully realized to day, combining massive arrangements with catchy songwriting, making them a perfect fit for an outdoor summer festival.
The Undercards
Jessica Lea Mayfield – A great choice of opener prior to Foxygen’s set, songwriter Jessica Lea Mayfield has a strong arsenal of simple but hard-hitting material that’s difficult not to enjoy. A regular collaborator and protégé of the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, she’s a talented artist and absolutely worth checking out.
Local Flavor
The Trippin Billies – Though the alternate stage to the main bands consists solely of cover bands, the most unique and talented is likely Trippin Billies, a distinguished Dave Matthews Band cover act with a well-developed following.
You Need To Know
Taking place in the Sheffield neighborhood in Lincoln Park, Sheffield Garden Walk predictably showcases tours of more than 80 gardens as well as architectural tours in the area. The festival’s headlining bands cost $20 in advance, or $25 at the gate.
The Bottom Line
Though Sheffield Garden Walk isn’t a music-focused festival, they did manage to pull Foxygen and Jessica Lea Mayfield, two impressive acts that seem perfect for an outdoor summer performance. With a cheaper admission than Foxygen’s tour itself, it’s a good opportunity to check out a neighborhood and some good tunes.
