Metro looms large as a post Wrigley Field destination. Its location just a block north on Clark Street, means that aftershows can get started early and keep going late.
And that's exactly what Steve Kimock and Electric Beethoven did on Friday night after Dead & Company had completed a two set show at the ballpark.
Kimock and EB leader Reed Mathis have a history of playing together, so their collaboration here came with some ready-made chemistry. And the band itself, making its Chicago debut, seems to be well-oiled from a few months gigging behind their Classical Dance Music (CDM) album Beathoven-- a concept which reimagines Beethoven's compositions as platforms for improvisation and features a host of superstar guests.
With Kimock's confident lead guitar, and a good dose of his material, the quintet stretched out mightly -- including a Dead cover ("Stella Blue"), a Paul Simon cover ("Graceland"), and a Jimmy Cliff number ("Many Rivers To Cross") to round things out in the second set.
