Marcus King & Dan Auerbach
Southern-rock revivalist Marcus King released his debut solo record, El Dorado, last week. The bluesy, soulful album was produced by the Black Keys’ Dan Auerbach, and the two guitarists jammed out gorgeous renditions of “Beautiful Stranger” and "Break" at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio.
Chris Forsyth, Ryley Walker & Garcia Peoples
In a truly unlikely but remarkable appearance, psychedelic-guitar wizard and Solar Motel Band founder Chris Forsyth joined the incredibly underrated psych-folk songwriter Ryley Walker on stage with New Jersey quartet Garcias Peoples for an extensive and heady jam at New York City venue Le Poisson Rouge during a Phish aftershow.
Sharon Van Etten ft. Norah Jones
Sharon Van Etten recently released an alternative version of her beautiful track “Seventeen” featuring Norah Jones, and brought the famed jazz pianist and songwriter with her to Stephen Colbert’s late night show for an especially emotional performance.
Yo La Tengo ft. Bill Frisell
Though Yo La Tengo brought a slew of guests on stage during their annual Hanukkah residency this year, of particular note was the endlessly talented guitarist Bill Frisell, who led the band through a thrilling rendition of their 1992 song “Detouring America With Horns.”
Buddy Guy ft. Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks
After finishing the final night of their annual residency at Chicago Theatre, Tedeschi Trucks Band founders Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks swung by Buddy Guy’s Legends to jam with the famed Chicago bluesman himself. Running through John Hiatt-written Buddy Guy single “Feels Like Rain” and Junior Wells’ “Hoodoo Man Blues,” the resulting music is everything the blues should be.
Brandi Carlile Collaborations
It would be wrong to exclude Brandi Carlile from this list, as the folk songwriter recently finished a Nashville residency that included performances like “That Wasn’t Me” with Tanya Tucker, “Redemption Day” with Sheryl Crow, “Total Eclipse Of The Heart” with Lucie Silvas, “Everything Is Free” with Courtney Barnett and “Like A Prayer” with Ruby Amanfu and more.
