Fans of Umphrey's McGee really do appreciate how transparent and engaging the band members can be.  The latest swing at next-level fan interaction comes in the form of a self-produced documentary, Reel to Real, in which they open up the vault and tell the band's story in their own words, cultivated from hours of professional and camcorder footage dating back to the band's earliest days.

The film made its debut as a part of a Denver New Year's run, and it comes to Chicago's Vic Theater for an interactive engagement with the hometown crowd on April 3rd.  In advance, we got to spend some quality time with both of the band's guitarists, in which they opened up about gear, influences, and much more.  You're going to want to check both of these out.

Those are some revealing interviews, but if they got the juices flowing, go ahead and work up some questions of your own.  Here's what the band has to say about the Chicago premiere:

It’s appropriate The Vic should be home to the Chicago premiere as it was home to many early UM gigs, most notably the final show with original drummer Mike Mirro. Look for The Vic to make several cameos, including some tense backstage moments prior to the 2002 New Year’s Eve show. A Q&A with Brendan Bayliss (Guitar/Vocals), Jefferson Waful (Director) & Kevin Browning (Creator) will follow the premiere. They will take audience questions about those youthful days on the road and discuss the origins of the documentary. Nothing is off limits.
