Keeping track of the venue evolution game for rising bands in the Chicago market is a fun diversion. With two co-headlining spots at Park West and a a big Saturday night gig at the Abbey in 2012, Greensky Bluegrass will alternate to the decidedly upscale City Winery for their first Chicago appearance of 2013.
It'll be a Tuesday night, February 19th to be exact, so perhaps some of the juice will be stolen from their more recent Chicago blowouts which occcured on weekends and holidays. But the trade off will be a very cozy environment for the band's homespun acoustic sound, coupled with a very manageable weeknight start time (7:30) for the 9 to 5ers. I think they'll be up for a jam or two as well.
And just as they (probably) drew it up on paper, I was curious about the opening act and now have become a fan. The Deadly Gentlemen play a progressive bluegrass that relies heavily on action packed vocals. Unfortunately, there is not a lot of their material streaming online (YouTube has a few gems) -- so download this set from Grey Fox Bluegrass festival to get a feel for what they do. The bass player is a second generation City Winery performer-- yep, Sam Grisman is David's son (he's played CW twice already). Check them out covering Vampire Weekend:
Tickets are available in both VIP, Reserved and Standing Room varieties.
