Umphrey’s McGee Fans, Get Happy! Introducing Charts, Graphs & Stats From The Barn

After a blistering four night run in NYC (complete with bonus sets galore for all manner of media outlets), and on the release day of their latest album Death By Stereo, it's not as if fans of Umphrey's McGee need an excuse to get happy.

But, when it rains, it pours, and The Barn is proud to roll-out the addition of Umphrey's McGee to its setlist repository!  So what does this mean? As many fans of Phish, Furthur & Grateful Dead will tell you, it means that you can expect some original stat-and-chart-related content, providing hard core fans with analysis of the band and their repertoire which can hopefully put their performances, and career, into perspective, bringing you closer to the music that you love.

For Umphrey's, this includes:

  • The Umphrey's McGee Rotation InfoGraphic, a sorted breakdown of tunes most commonly played, with an emphasis on songs performed at the last few shows and the tour as a whole, so you can get a feel for what's been happening, and what could be coming next
  • Visual Setlists -- The Barn's unique way of contextualizing setlists with textual formatting clues, indicating the rarity and last appearance of each song performed
  • Comprehensive lists -- and accompanying charts and graphs -- detailing statistics for every song ever played by Umphrey's McGee
  • New insights on places played, song timings, and lots more ways to understand and the band's body of work

Fair warning, I consider these initial insights to be "Beta", there are likely a few errors.  Setlist data refinement is challenging work to begin with. A band like Umphrey's McGee ups the ante, where song lists are riddled with "jams" and teases and songs split into multiple parts.  Depending on the setlist author, these can be treated as a footnote or an official song. "Jimmy Stewarts", "Lyrical Stewarts "and "Named Stewarts" make things doubly difficult in drawing the line between improvisations and full-fledged songs, but we'll do our best.

There is definitely room for improvement here so please contact me with any glaring errors. I certainly haven't listened to all 1600+ shows in the repository, but I have tried to apply some common conventions based on best practices I've seen at Phish.net, in my opinion, the exemplary source for such things. My stats are based on a refinement / clean-up of the setlist data found at umphreys.com

Stats in this post (and its sister pages) are current as of 9/11/11.   I will update them periodically (likely not daily until I can add a bit more automation) and I'll tweet whenever I do, so follow @thebarnpresents if you always want the most up-to-date information.

Speaking of which, this repository also gives me the ability to create personalized zzyzx-style statistics for individual fans.  The User Interface is not quite ready, but if you simply can't wait... you can do one of two things:  follow The Barn on facebook or Twitter (better yet, both), and send an email to info (@) tomorrowsverse.com with your facebook profile or twitter username and list of shows you've seen (YYYY-MM-DD format if you please), and I'll send you a personalized statistics report to tide you over until full site functionality is ready.  I'll also continue to roll out new features steadily, so if this sort of analysis is of interest to you, please stay in touch.

So, without further ado, here's the link to our Umphrey's McGee Stats Home Page and some initial analyses with links to more details.  Enjoy this first round.  There will be plenty more to come, and check back frequently for the Rotation Infographic and Visual Setlists (both updated after every show).

There have been 791 different songs to appear on an Umphrey's setlist since 1998 -- 374 of them are what I consider to be in "active" (played at least once since the start of 2009... the Rotation Infographic is based on "active" songs).  Of active songs, 107 have been played only once; there have been 239 total one-timers since the beginning.  Here's how that breaks down visually.

Here is a breakdown of the top twenty most commonly performed songs of all time, followed by the top twenty most commonly peformed song (2009-present).  Songs that appear on both lists are highlighted in yellow.

The next section, has breakdown of songs that have appeared in "special" slots -- set openers, closers and encores.  The band has committed to variety here.  The pie charts show the number of songs performed in that slot once vs. the number of songs that have made multiple appearances in that slot.  The bar charts show the top twenty (or so) most commonly performed songs in that slot.

Potential Biggest Bust Outs

I created an statistic, Bust-Out Factor (BOF), which is a combination of number of shows since last time played and the amount of time.  Songs that were played more times, but more recently, as rate higher on the BOF scale than songs performed once or twice but longer ago.  Based on this ranking, here are the biggest potential bust-outs.

Shared Songs

Here is one of the things that I'm most excited about for the future. The ability of The Barn's database to compare the repertoires of the bands that are included in it.  Here's a first take on songs performed by Umphrey's McGee that have also been performed by the other bands in our database (Grateful Dead, Phish, Furthur), sorted by number of times played by Umphrey's.  Warning:  this list of 106 titles includes anything that has mutually appeared on a setlist (e.g. Jam, Bass Solo, etc.).
