Here's a story that I've been following with great curiosity and still have to pinch myself a little to believe it's true.
Since about 1985, I'm sure there's been no figure as singularly important in the jam scene as Col Bruce Hampton, Ret. A man of many talents, his role as Morris in Billy Bob Thornton's Sling Blade is legendary.
But as a leading man? In a film that -- albeit low budget -- appears to to aimed squarely at a general audience.
Here comes Here Comes Rusty, a comedy where Bruce squares up against the very funny Fred Willard in a film where "a reluctant dog track owner tries to outrun his problems with the bet of a lifetime." But make no mistake, Bruce is the star attraction according to the film's website, and what can be discerned from the trailer.
He also had a say in the soundtrack, naturally, and even brought in wunderkind teenage guitarist Brandon "Taz" Niederaurer to play a role written especially for him.
And, you know, it kind of looks like there might be something here. It's a bit difficult to figure given the low budget, indie nature... but that could also mean great things. And there's a track record with some of the talent (Willard, Joey Lauren Adams) but less so on the other side of the camera (writers and director have limited credits, and nothing I've seen).
Hampton, Taz, ARU's Matt Slocum, Nth Power's Nikkie Glaspie and AJ Ghent will perform immediately after the film's premiere as Dicky and the Dinosaurs. The premiere, and concert, will occur April 3rd at Buckhead Theatre in Atlanta.
No word yet on whether additional screenings -- at film festivals or in general release -- will be added. More information at herecomesrusty.com.
