Roscoe Village jazz club Hungry Brain closed in 2014 after 17 years of business. With the space remaining dormant since, the venue is set to reopen in 2016 with new ownership.

One of the new owners will be Mike Reed, a jazz drummer and founder of Pitchfork Music Festival, as revealed in an interview with Crain’s. Reed also owns Constellation, a larger venue located mere blocks from Hungry Brain.

“It’s where I got serious about putting on music- improvised jazz- in 2001, and I’d like to bring that back,” Reed told Crain’s while also revealing the continuation of weekly reading and music nights once the venue opens.

Perhaps best known for hosting Umbrella Music’s Transmission Series, a weekly improvisational jazz night, Hungry Brain is said to be maintaining much of the same interior design.

Though no dates are set for an official opening, Chicago jazz fans can agree that the venue’s resurrection is a hugely positive force in the local scene.
