Notes From The Jazz Underground Winds Down

This installment of Notes From The Jazz Underground is based on the August 19th broadcast.  This also happens to be the show's penultimate broadcast as host Paul Abella is taking on another morning shift on WDCB and surrendering his Friday night slot.

The show itself was a combination of a Chicago Jazz Festival preview with a couple of the little rabbit holes and musical oddities that we love NFTJU for around here (Big Band Zappa... woo-hoo!).

Dig this.  The Bad Plus and Tim Berne will be at Jazz Fest playing Ornette Coleman's Science Fiction.  So, the playlist kicks of Ornette (from Science Fiction) -> The Bad Plus (playing a tune from Science Fiction) -> Tim Berne (with Kris Davis).  The Kris Davis tune is not on Spotify, so enjoy this video of Tim and Kris in action live, following a cut with her and guitarist Bill Frisell.

How about this?  Frank Rosaly is one of Chicago's own...if you notice, that track is ALL percussion.

We go from Chris Greene (a guy who has really absorbed Branford Marsalis... also playing at the Jazz Fest) to Branford's jazz/hip-hop group, Buckshot LeFonque right into Russell Gunn's Ethnomusicology (Russell was in Buckshot LeFonque).

The Robert Glasper's not out yet, so keep an eye out.

The Keith Jarrett tune ("Mortgage on My Soul") is subtitled "Wah-Wah" because of Charlie Haden's use of a wah on an acoustic bass, and that's unmistakably Charlie back with Ornette to wrap up the show with "Friends and Neighbors" from 1972 or so.

A couple of additional notes from Paul:

• Jeff Beck's solos on Blast from the East and Led Boots are awesome enough, but add in Jason Rebello's keys on Led Boots and Vinnie Colaiuta's drum solo on Blast from the East?  Holy Shit. 
• That's Sco with Joe Lovano (those two also at Jazz Fest) on "Camp Out"
• the new Marbin is BURNING.
