We've been spotlighting city shows a bit more than suburban fare these days, but when something this good comes our way, it's time to give it some love. Downers Grove becomes Downers Groove for one night in February. Take advantage of the extra day in the calendar on the 29th by checking out this classic double bill.
When last we encountered Mavis' old school gospel and soul, she was lighting up the stage with Jeff Tweedy and Wilco at the Civic Opera House in December. She brings her own band out to the jewel of Downers Grove, the majestic Tivoli, for a weekday break which should feature plenty of songs from the Tweedy produced Grammy winner You Are Not Alone. Mavis is a national treasure from right here in Chicago, still going strong at 72 years old; if you have yet to see this remarkable woman perform, it is time to do so. This venue played host to Poi Dog Pondering last fall, and we're happy that they continue to utilize this space for high caliber events such as this.
The icing? Opening the show will be one of our favorite local acts: JC Brooks and The Uptown Sound. This band brings high energy soul, infused with a raffish rock edge, to every gig. The band has spent more time on the road lately, so this is a fine opportunity to get a taste close to home. Brooks and crew should have no problem getting the crowd warmed up.
Reserved ($50) and General Admission ($35) tickets are both available. Holders of Premium tickets will also go home with a limited edition concert poster.
