I feel incredibly fortunate to stumble upon this recording of Father John Misty performing at Chicago's Lincoln Hall on Halloween Eve this year.
Digging in, there is something about the performance that just clicks. While the album Fear Fun has an elegant, lush sound, it feels like these songs achieve a an even truer voice in the live setting.
No doubt, songs like "Misty's Nightmares" and "This Is Sally Hatchet" remain folky at the core, but they get delivered with a little more oomph. Nice to seem them not forgetting about the rock side of "folk rock".
Meanwhile, J Tillman takes several opportunities engage the crowd often throughout the performance, even teasing before the "encore" that the band has run out of material. That's the signal for cover time, as they trot out Dean Martin's "Nevertheless (I'm In Love With You)" and the Canned Heat nugget "On The Road Again".
Next time Father John Misty hits Chicago, it'll be at the much more spacious Vic Theater with The Walkmen, so enjoy the intimacy the comes through in this recording.
