This installment of Notes From The Jazz Underground features the playlist based on the December 6th show.
After offering two themes in the previous week's broadcast, NFTJU host Paul Abella returns to free form no-rules jazz programming. No theme at all. Not even a little bit.
Hightlights include new(ish) stuff from Trombone Shorty and Robert Glasper and John Scofield guesting on a Wild Magnolias tune. The Dianne Reeves tune (not on Spotify… provided here as a YouTube link) is a messy trying-to-be-psychedelic-but-damn-funky version of "Tomorrow Never Knows".
J. Davis Trio is from Chicago and is one of the very few rapper over live band set ups that really sounds great. While others in the category tend to be awkward, they just nail it. The Art Ensemble tune will probably freak a few people out, as well it should.
Notes From The Jazz Underground runs Friday nights on WDCB 90.9 FM.
