It's safe to say that Snarky Puppy's GroundUp Music Festival had one of the most ambtious forward looking jazz lineups that I've ever seen. I anxiously await until they bring something like this closer to home than Miami Beach. But for now, we've got several great captures of last weekend's action courtesy of CHeeSeHeaDPRoDuCTioNS.
Let's start with a pair of blockbuster collaborations. Mandolin wunderkind Chris Thile takes a solo (inperceptively quiet at first, but increasingly and shockingly great going forward) in this long jam through "Lingus" and "Shofukan".
Then Esperanza Spaulding lends her considerable star power to "Grown Folks".
On the non-Snarky front Charlie Hunter Trio welcomed Jeff Coffin on this jam which utlimately yields Hall & Oates' "I Can't Go For That",
Funky Knuckles is a band that I've always kind of looked at as cut from the Snarky Puppy mold. They do the festival hosts proud on "Moorish".
