This installment of Notes From The Jazz Underground is based on the August 19th broadcast.
Regrettably, the theme of this week's playlist was a bit of a downer. It was an elegy for one of host Paul Abell's oldest friends, Reed, who was murdered in Milwaukee that week.
Reed was a fan of metal and the Beastie Boys. The jazz that spoke to him was shredding 70s fusion. The list was made with the specific intent to get some stuff that his fallen friend had really enjoyed, or that he might appreciate.
"I swear I could hear him laugh when I busted out the Herbie/Metallica mashup," Paul tells me.
Rounding out the playlist were a lot of new releases from the past couple of weeks. The Jeff Parker, Bad Plus, Shawn Maxwell, Derrick Hodge and Throttle Elevator Music tunes are all brand new, and some were tough to locate on streaming services. The Claudia Quintet (video below) and Rez Abbasi (check out Holy Butter here) are from earlier this year.
Programming note: Thundercat is a bad, bad, bad man.
Further programming note: The Craig Taborn tune is unlike anything I've heard. Had to look up to see who it was since it sounded so refreshing. Turns out, at least three callers contacted the station with the same input. Skip to that track if you just want your mind blown.
