Sunshine Daydream! Chicago Area Theaters For 3rd Annual Grateful Dead Night At Movies 8/1/13

Luckily, our friends at Rhino Entertainment and Fathom Events have just that formula in store this August, finally releasing a pristine copy of the 1972 film Sunshine Daydream for screening in theaters. The occasion marks what would have been Jerry Garcia's 71st birthday, and Captain Trips and his bandmates are featured prominently in this chronicle of the famed concert to benefit Ken Kesey's Springfield Creamery in Veneta, Oregon.  The release, at 130 minutes, will also features some recent interviews with notable attendees, including Ken Babbs, Sam Cutler, Wavy Gravy and Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Garcia.

The film has been digitally restored from its original 16mm film to HD resolution, all the better to see the colorful Deadheads, many trying to beat the extreme summer heat by shedding clothing.  This is a unique window into an unfiltered slice of the Pacific Northwest counterculture in 1972. All screenings begin at 7:30 p.m. and Chicago area fans can participate in this one-night-only event at 22 theaters, including a few with IMAX (!), scattered all over the city and burbs.
